Foldable iPhone “Ultra”: why production may still be highly limited
Industry reports point to only a few hundred devices assembled per day. That pace belongs to the production ramp, while Apple has not officially confirmed the device or its name.

A future foldable iPhone, often referred to by the unofficial name “iPhone Ultra”, is reportedly still being produced in very small numbers. Manufacturing-chain reports describe output of a few hundred devices per day in late August. That figure sounds low for a consumer launch, but it mainly describes an industrial ramp-up phase rather than the final capacity of the production lines.
What is being reported
The first batches would be used to verify that the device can be assembled consistently while meeting strict quality requirements. Production remains deliberately cautious during such checks. At the same time, annual targets of several million units continue to circulate. These claims are not necessarily contradictory: a line can deliver very few units during validation, then accelerate when yields improve.
Apple has not confirmed a foldable iPhone, the “Ultra” name, its specifications, price, or release date. The current information should therefore be treated as an industrial signal, not as a product announcement.
Why foldable smartphones are difficult to manufacture
A foldable design adds several sensitive elements that a conventional phone does not have:
- a multi-part hinge that must remain precise after thousands of movements;
- a flexible display that is harder to laminate, protect, and align;
- a folding area whose appearance and strength must remain consistent;
- an extremely thin frame that must stay rigid in both positions;
- additional water, dust, temperature, and impact testing.
A small variation in the hinge or display assembly may be enough for a device to fail inspection. Yield, the percentage of units that meet every requirement, therefore becomes as important as the raw speed of the line.
A few hundred units per day does not automatically mean a small programme
Manufacturing usually scales through several stages: pilot production, tooling validation, correction of recurring defects, operator training, and then a gradual increase in volume. The reported hundreds of devices may correspond to one of these stages.
The key question is whether production can move from validation to stable mass output. If yields rise quickly, volumes can change significantly within a few weeks. If they do not, a launch could begin with limited inventory, longer waits, or availability that expands region by region.
What this could mean for buyers
Limited launch supply could result in quick sell-outs and delivery times that vary between markets. Fewer configurations may also be available at first. The price, frequently described as very high in rumours, has not been confirmed and cannot be inferred from the production rate alone.
For a first-generation foldable product, real durability matters more than scarcity. Hinge behaviour, crease visibility, display strength, battery life, and repair costs will be the most useful points to examine in independent reviews.

- a delivery date that may differ from the presentation date;
- actual availability in Belgium and the rest of the European Union;
- durability tests performed on retail hardware.

It suggests that hinge and flexible-display quality remain central to the process. Until Apple presents the device, the reasonable approach is to keep supply-chain indications separate from confirmed product facts.
